In the early 1900s in Ustica, a marginal island north of Palermo, the arrival of a steamboat summoned the inhabitants on the dock, intrigued by the novelties coming from the “continent”. In 1926 the steamboat started to bring chained men too.
Ustica had been destined to host both forced criminals and political prisoners, sent there not to damage the fascist regime.
This documentary analyzes – through direct and conveyed reports – the memory of Antonio Gramsci, communist intellectual, member of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, detained in Ustica in December 1926 by the fascist regime. Gramsci spent there 44 days.
In Ustica Gramsci found “his” South, before he was transferred to San Vittore Prison.
This documentary focuses on the Political Inmates School, created by Gramsci during his brief stay on the island.
The school, open to everybody, helped contain illiteracy, involving citizens of all ages and social statuses. Many islanders still remember Gramsci and the school, one of the cornerstones of their historical memory.
